Team-Style Play Disc golf is played with a number of variations , but in the classic “ random draw doubles ” variation that is played at Willow Park , two teams of two play sideby-side , facing off against each other , and each team of two shares a common score . In addition , each team chooses the best of the two throws as they progress towards the basket . Usually , in a club outing setting with multiple teams , different sets of teams are staggered at different holes throughout the course to start to eliminate wait times . ( One set of teams will start at the first hole , one at the second , etc .)
Out of Bounds In disc golf , if a disc is thrown beyond the established boundaries of the course , there is a one stroke penalty . The player then brings the disc to the location where it went out-of-bounds , and gets one meter relief from the out-of-bounds line . Afterwards , play is resumed with an additional penalty stroke added to their score . Some courses have special obstacles that must be thrown through as additional challenges , such as between two trees , or through a man-made hoop or obstacle . This varies from course to course and from hole to hole .

Par Numbers Much like golf , each hole on a disc golf course has a “ par ” number ( pars range from ‘ Par 3 ’ to ‘ Par 4 ’ at the Willow Park disc golf course , but other courses may vary .)
Keeping Score Every team of two is equipped with a score card , with which they write down the number of throws ( or “ strokes ”) for both teams that are playing together at each hole .
Play Format Play begins with all four players “ teeing off ” and “ driving ” the disc towards the basket with a long throw . Afterwards , each team of two chooses the best of their individual drives , and both teams throw from that chosen spot .
After the initial “ drive ,” whichever team is further away from the basket throws first , and the cycle then repeats until both teams have completed the hole .
Every time a disc lands on the ground , the location of the disc is marked with a plastic marker . Players must throw from behind the marker or incur a penalty .
Helpful Tips / Important Etiquette : — Bring a bag for your discs ! Bags are available for purchase through online retailers , specialty disc golf shops , and many sporting goods stores .
— Bring a “ starter set ” of discs . Skilled professionals at sporting goods stores that sell discs will be happy to assist , and members of disc golf clubs are more than happy to offer advice on a good range of discs for a starter set .
— Be sure to mark your discs with your name and number or email in permanent marker ! Discs sometimes get lost during play in dense underbrush , but disc golfers who happen upon another player ’ s disc are happy to get in contact and return it .
— Always be sure to be quiet and respectful of other players on the course when they are “ driving ”
— Make sure that a hole is clear before making your first “ drive ” to ensure the safety of other groups of players further down the course .

Basket Rules Each disc golf basket is made out of three components : The upper basket , the lower basket , and the chains , which hang from the upper basket into the lower basket and help to trap discs . The objective of the game is to get the disc to fall into the lower basket , or become trapped in the chains that hang from the upper basket . If a disc happens to land on top of the upper basket , the hole is not complete . A player whose disc lands on the upper basket will take the disc and drop it down in the basket below , and will incur one additional stroke on their score , as if the disc was thrown from a nearby location .
