Vermont Magazine Fall 2019 | Página 3

From the Desk of Joshua Sherman, M.D. The theme of this issue of VERMONT Magazine is “Impact”. In honor of our 30th year as a magazine, we celebrate those who have made a difference - and those Vermonters who are working to make a difference. When a lone farmer had the courage to stand up at a town meeting in Arlington and speak against the tide, he couldn’t have predicted that his neighbor, the artist Norman Rockwell, would be inspired to create The Four Freedoms. Ultimately, those 4 paintings went on tour in 1943, raising $133 million dollars in war bonds (the equivalent of nearly 2 billion dollars today). It was that influx of cash that changed the course of World War II. And it only happened, because a Vermont farmer had the courage to stand up and speak. In 2006, when 2 young Vermont dreamers (Anaïs Mitchell and Ben T. Matchstick) discussed a new project (a folk opera re-envisioning the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice), they didn’t know that their show, HADESTOWN, would go on to win 8 TONY ® AWARDS in June 2019, confirming that Vermont is an ideal place to develop new works. In 2016, when the poet and musician Benjamin Lerner had the courage to seek help and stop using opiates; he couldn’t have predicted that just 3 years later, he would be creating a new musical hybrid of classical piano and rap, journaling his tale of addiction. Most important, he is now using his talents to make a difference in other people’s lives, by encouraging them to get sober. And because it is near-impossible for any of us to predict the positive impact we can make in each other’s lives - and how the lives we touch will subsequently impact others - it is up to each and every one of us to be kind with our words and thoughtful in our actions and interactions. As we enjoy the beautiful foliage and celebrate the fall season in Vermont - which always marks a time of change - it is essential that we remember that we, too, can affect change. We all can have a positive impact on our communities. Joshua Media Old Mill Road Media, LLC Joshua Sherman M.D. Publisher Vermont Magazine P.O.
