IN MEMORIAM Hon. Frederic W. Allen Hon. Elizabeth A. Leopold Hon. Edward Goutas Justice Allen, a lion of the legal profession, died peacefully at his home on April 9, 2016 at the age of 89. Born in Burlington on May 31, 1926, Frederic W. Allen was class president, played football, ran high hurdles and was captain of the basketball team that made it to the 1944 State Tournament. Upon graduation, he entered the Navy and later attended Miami University of Ohio and then Boston University School of Law. Frederic Allen practiced for 30 years with John Dinse in Burlington and was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. In 1984, he was appointed to the Vermont Supreme Court, where Justice Allen remained, issuing fair-minded, clear and thoughtful decisions, until he retired in 1997. Aside from his prestigious and admirable legal career, Justice Allen was an accomplished sailor throughout his life, even purchasing a boat before a home because “you can’t sail a house.” He enjoyed skiing and played handball until the age of 80. Justice Allen is survived by his wife of 35 years, Karen McAndrew, and four children. Elizabeth Anne Leopold, who was born in New York on November 11, 1954, succumbed to injuries from a fall in her home and died surrounded by family on April 19, 2016. Elizabeth Leopold loved animals, being enthusiastically involved in her family’s Morgan Horse program, and volunteering regularly at the Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society in Woodstock. She loved all genres of music, played the piano and enjoyed photography. Her legal career was devoted to public service, as a deputy state’s attorney, assistant attorney general and ultimately traffic court hearing officer. Throughout her career, Judge Leopold was an advocate for children, crime victims and animals. She is survived by her spouse and life-partner of 33 years, Jane. Born September 12, 1942 in Bellows Falls, Vermont, Edward M. Goutas passed away following a brief illness on June 19, 2016. Shortly after opening his own practice in Bellows Falls in 1973, Edward Goutas was elected to the position of probate judge, which position he held until the Westminster Probate District closed. Judge Goutas was a four letter athlete in Bellows Falls in football, basketball, track and baseball. He also set diving records for their newly formed swim team. Playing duplicate bridge, achieving Life Master rank and golf were more recent passions. Upon retirement, he moved to Florida with his wife, Nancy, to play golf daily. He achieved his first hole-in-one golfing on May 27, 2016.
