Robert Gensburg John T . Ewing
Charles E . Gibson , Jr ., 91 , passed away at Barre Gardens on October 10 , 2017 . He grew up in S . Ryegate and attended St . Johnsbury Academy , later attending the University of Michigan for undergrad and law school . Gibson served as Attorney General and State ’ s Attorney during his career , and maintained a practice in Montpelier for many years at Patterson , Gibson & Noble . He also served on the Board of Bar Examiners for 16 years , served as president of the YLD ( junior bar at the time ) and the ULC . He enjoyed Scottish Country Dancing and helped co-found the Catamount Pipe Band . Gibson was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Barre , served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Northern NE and on the Permanent Judicial Committee of the Synod of the Northeast . He was also active in the Rotary Club for over five decades . Mr . Gibson is survived by his wife , stepchildren , granddaughter , nieces and nephews .
Robert Gensburg , died on November 9 , 2017 at his home in Lyndon at the age of 78 . Born in Watertown , NY , he attended Albany Law School after serving in the National Guard . Bob practiced law from 1967 until his last days , and will be remembered for his passion for equal rights , always carrying the Bill of Rights in his wallet . He was the Town Agent for the Town of Lyndon for many years . In 1974 Governor Salmon appointed Bob to be the Special Investigator to investigate a St . Albans policeman accused of planting evidence , the case resulting in a conviction and the freeing of many innocent victims . As pro bono attorney for the ACLU , he was instrumental in the “ Brigham Decision ” which prompted Act 60 . He also volunteered to represent a detainee at Guantanamo who he helped free after 14 years of being wrongfully detained and tortured . Bob loved reading about WWII and astronomy , classical music , sailing , word puzzles and playing cards with friends . He raised beef cattle with his wife for 35 years . He is survived by his wife , son , and grandchildren .
John T . Ewing , 85 , passed away on November 25 , 2017 after a long illness of cancer of the bone marrow . He came to Vermont to practice law in 1957 after graduating from Yale Law School . He loved Vermont and devoted much of his life to conservation of its countryside and culture . John founded Smart Growth Vermont , believing that businesses could find common ground in protecting Vermont values through collaboration . He founded the Vermont chapter of the Nature Conservancy and helped establish the ECHO Center in Burlington . Following a career as President of Bank of Vermont , Governor Dean appointed John as chair of the Vermont Housing Conservation Board and as Chair of the Vermont Environmental Board . John believed his success in life was due to the constant support and wisdom of his wife of many years , Jane . They had eight children between them and twelve grandchildren .
