MR. GIBSON: I wasn’t doing much of any-
thing at first! [Laughs]. But I did start gradu-
ally building up a practice. I realized though
that I had to have more income. I thought
I’d never get by on what I was doing and the
money that Clyde Davis loaned me was go-
ing to run out, so I ran for State’s Attorney.
John Downs had been State’s Attorney and
he decided not to run again. All the southern
part of the county is where my family came
from. I had all that advantage because some
of my ancestors came from Peacham, too.
MR. BELCHER: So I assume you won that
election.
MR. GIBSON: Yeah, there were three run-
ning, including a guy who had been State’s
Attorney at one time, he was probably in his
forties. Why he ran again I don’t know. He
was running an automobile agency located
in St. J. at the time. I campaigned all around.
I went out into the hayfields and visited farm-
ers. I went everywhere in the county and won
the election handily.
