MANTLE OF THE EXPERT
We Believe that Learning Should be,
Active, Challenging and Meaningful
In September, Mantle of the Expert (MOE) trainers,
Luke Abbott and Richard Kieran joined us for an
inspirational training on Mantle. Staff returned to
work full of new ideas!
The training team that joined us have over twenty
years of experience in teaching, coaching, and
training teachers in the use of the approach. The
training consolidated staff learning and gave them
fresh ideas on how to engage our children in a
meaningful way. We believe that learning with our
students through observing sessions led by these
trainers is the most comprehensive and practical
training available on Mantle of the Expert.
Additionally, we would like to congratulate our very
own Miss Louise on receiving her quality mark of
MOE Lead practitioner. Miss Louise was observed
teaching her class by the team and was given the
feedback that she is an excellent and sophisticated
MOE practitioner. She now has the ability to train
teachers across the globe on this inquiry-based
approach to teaching and learning.
We are so proud of her accomplishment.

Mantle of the Expert is an education approach that
uses imaginary contexts to generate purposeful and
engaging activities for learning.
Mantle of the Expert works by the teacher planning a
fictional context where the students take on the
responsibilities of an expert team. As the team, they
are commissioned by a client to work on a
assignment, which has been planned to generate
tasks and activities that will involve them in studying
and developing wide areas of the curriculum. For
example, a class of students are cast as a team of
archaeologists excavating an Egyptian tomb for the
Cairo Museum. To complete the commission the
students will need to research ancient Egyptian
history – finding out about tombs, artefacts, and
rituals – and, in the process, will study wide areas of
the curriculum including, history, geography, art,
design and RE, as well as developing skills in reading,
writing, problem solving, and inquiry. Mantle of the
Expert is not designed to teach the entire curriculum,
all the time, but is rather an approach to be used
selectively by the teacher along with a range of other
methods. (www.mantleoftheexpert.com)
