SERVICE LEARNING by Roxana Din Teacher,  Reception B This year several classes have taken part in service-learning projects from trash collection to orphanage visits, toy-drives to reading-buddies. Service activities are positioned to appeal to intrinsic motivators. Students are driven by a desire to be meaningfully stimulated, to develop self-efficacy and to experience integrity.  Service connects to any area of curriculum. Some of our Maths class had to use their calculating skills at the supermarket as a Service-Learning project where the groceries they bought in a challenge to be boxed and sent to underprivileged families. Through service learning, students learn educational standards by tackling real-life problems in their community. We wish to give our students many opportunities to experience hands-on service- learning projects that will not only have an impact in our community but they will also have a meaningful impact on our children’s minds and hearts as we research, engage and then reflect upon the challenges of our world. This helps students and teachers develop a sense of empathy, compassion, gratitude and civic responsibility. Increasingly, as the future generation of the world will face difficult challenges, it is crucial and more relevant than ever to cultivate a new generation of caring, social-driven entrepreneurs and activists.    Our NGO - Verita Foundation  www.veritafoundation.ro/en/  offers a unique platform for our students to access service-learning opportunities and projects.  We want our young students to engage, connect and partner within diverse communities and contribute their time and find meaningful solutions. Service-learning at Verita is about building engagement. We can help our students reach their learning objectives while contributing to a better world for them to live in. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish as we plan service-learning opportunities into each of our units of inquiry! Article by Mason McCormick Principal of Primary VERITA INSIGHTS  |  19
