AROUND THE QUAD

In Memoriam : Jim Brady

The university community is saddened by the passing of longserving Stevenson Trustee James T . Brady on September 10 . Jim dedicated his life to strengthening business and higher education in Maryland . A New Yorker by birth , Jim began a lengthy career with Arthur Andersen & Co . after college , which ultimately brought him to Baltimore and a deeper involvement in working to strengthen Maryland ’ s economy .
Jim was known for his extensive public service in Maryland , including working on numerous public and private boards and commissions , serving two gubernatorial administrations , and as the State ’ s Secretary of Business and Economic Development from 1995 to 1998 . Most recently , he served as Chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland from 2016 to 2018 . Deeply dedicated to Maryland ’ s economic competitiveness and the success of its citizens , Jim knew that a robust system of public and independent higher education in the state was absolutely essential for ensuring this .
His association with Stevenson began in May 1996 when he served as Villa Julie ’ s Commencement Speaker and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the College . In 1997 , he became a charter member of the new President ’ s Advisory Council , and in 2010 was elected to our Board of Trustees . During a decade of Board service , Jim always brought insight and well-informed perspectives to the topics and issues that are the work of the Board . He served on our Academic Affairs

Committee , which naturally aligned with his deeply held values and commitment to the transformative power of education . In addition , he and his wife Fran were strong supporters of the arts on campus , capital projects , and scholarships that responded to students ’ financial needs in their junior and senior years . He loved our students , their successes , and Stevenson ’ s mission . Jim will be greatly missed here at Stevenson and by many whose lives he touched throughout our state .

Stevenson Named a “ Best Value School ” by U . S . News

For the fourth year in a row , Stevenson University has been named among the nation ’ s “ Best Value Schools ” by U . S . News and World Report . The 2022 Best Colleges listings , released in September , also ranked Stevenson among the “ Best Regional Universities- North ” and “ Best Colleges for Veterans .”
To assign a university the “ Best Value ” designation , U . S . News evaluates an institution ’ s academic quality and its net cost of attendance after the average level of need-based financial aid . The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost , the better the value .
“ We are pleased that Stevenson has been recognized among the Best Value Schools in our region and the nation now for four years running ,” said Stevenson President Elliot Hirshman , Ph . D . “ Stevenson is committed to ensuring access to an exceptional college experience for students and their families through a broad range of institutional aid and scholarship programs . We also believe that our strong focus on career education and providing personalized support to help our students grow intellectually , socially , and professionally all contribute to the strong value of a Stevenson education .”
