PRESIDENT ’ S PERSPECTIVE
This issue of Ventures comes to you after a transformative year for Stevenson . We opened new campus facilities to enhance our students ’ academic and extracurricular experiences , and broke ground on the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Performing Arts Center .
In February , the Center for Student Life and Leadership officially opened in the Garrison Student Union , providing student clubs and organizations with 8,000-square-feet of dedicated space to meet , collaborate , and create a vibrant campus culture together . Later that month , the Kahlert Foundation Makerspace opened in the Manning Academic Center . Featuring an Innovation Lab and Biomedical Engineering Lab , the Makerspace contains a variety of specialized tools and equipment to provide hands-on , experiential learning opportunities . You can read more about how this facility supports one of our newest academic programs , Biomedical Engineering , on page 14 , and gives our students the hands-on technical , design , and creative experience that are essential parts of this rapidly growing field .
The Philip A . Zaffere Library officially opened in March . The opening celebration brought together supporters and community members , including donors , alumni , and state and local officials , to dedicate this wonderful new building and resource for our students . The Zaffere Library centralizes all of Stevenson ’ s library services and provides students with research and scholarship resources , study spaces for individuals and groups , and a multipurpose event space . Another great feature of the Zaffere Library are its windows and its outdoor amphitheater and veranda that give our students an opportunity to enjoy beautiful vistas of our campus .
Two significant academic partnerships were also finalized this year . Stevenson became the first private institution of higher learning in Maryland to join the Community College of Baltimore County ’ s ( CCBC ) “ Degrees to Succeed ” program . The program streamlines the transfer process for CCBC students , and we are excited to connect more students with the benefits of a Stevenson education . To support our students ’ post-baccalaureate success , the university entered into an affiliation agreement with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine ( LECOM ) Early Acceptance Program ( EAP ),
providing qualified Stevenson students with clear roadmaps to future careers in medicine , dentistry , or podiatry through LECOM , the nation ’ s largest medical school .
Finally , through the generosity of our donors and supporters , we have broken ground on the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Performing Arts Center . This new facility will join the Zaffere Library , Manning Academic Center , and School of Design , Arts , and Communication on our North campus to create our academic hub while providing a new venue for enriching campus life through theater , music , dance , fashion , film , guest speakers , and other cultural events .
Reflecting on all that has happened in the last year at Stevenson , it is clear that none of this would be possible without the generosity of our many supporters and alumni who see the great value of the Stevenson educational experience , for today ’ s students and for generations to come . For your enduring friendship and vision , we thank you .
It ’ s a great day to be a Mustang !
Sincerely ,
Elliot L . Hirshman , Ph . D .
