from Stevenson in 2016 , also credits her experiences as a student — from collaborative research with faculty to SoLVE Center problem-based learning discussions with peers — with preparing her for the demands of a joint MD / Ph . D . program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York . “ I have been at SUNY Downstate since Fall 2017 . I ’ ve completed years one and two as well as part of year three of my MD , and taken Step 1 of my medical board exams . I have been in the Ph . D . program since Fall 2019 , during which I took one year of classes followed by qualifying exams , and the rest of the time has been dedicated to my thesis work .” She credits the mentoring and community at
SU with giving her the impetus for pursuing such a demanding program pursuing dual doctoral degrees and intensive research .
“ My professors always believed in me and encouraged me to expand my goals , and one professor in particular who encouraged me to pursue not only an MD , but a Ph . D . as well , and it is largely thanks to their encouragement that I decided to go for it ,” she says .
“ I think a great takeaway from Stevenson that I would like to share is its attitude of collegiality . Everyone was always supportive , from faculty to peers , and that attitude of helpfulness and willingness to work towards everyone ’ s success has been so valuable to me going forward , especially in competitive fields such as medicine . Stevenson taught me to never narrow your scope of caring to just yourself ,” says Singman . “ Lift others up with you , and you will have the most fulfilling experience .”
COMMUNITY , CAREER , CONNECTIONS “ The younger students , freshmen and sophomores , are expressing their career interests ,” Burkett says . “ Due to the new flexibility in our program , we ’ re able to show them the paths forward , which they may have been unsure about . I ’ m really excited that by doing this , we ’ re putting our students in places better and faster than we were before .”
The Chemistry and Biochemistry program does everything it can to maintain strong relationships with various groups in the community so that students can connect with internships , networks , and other career-ready opportunities . While the redesign transpired during the midst of the COVID pandemic in 2020-2021 , that didn ’ t stop Burkett and his colleagues from moving forward with what they knew their students needed .
“ We never stopped Cookies with Chemists ,” Burkett says with a smile . The pandemic presented so many challenges , pivots and changes , but the program continued to offer the communitybuilding through Zoom links and Internet-based games . “ I ’ m really proud of this ,” Burkett says .
