Can you talk to us more about your latest single " Idea of Her "?“ Idea of Her” is about how a person can seem a certain way but then turn out to be something completely different. It also follows the message of " what you see on the outside isn ' t always what ' s on the inside." A lot of people try to act or look a certain way to fit in or to be liked, but never do we get to see the real person deep down.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song? A single event didn ' t trigger me to write this song, but over the years I ' ve continued to notice how people don ' t always show their true colors and change themselves for others. I like writing about general relatable observations like this.
How was the film experience? The filming experience for the music video of“ Idea Of Her” was the most fun shoot I ' ve done. The whole cast and crew were so friendly and funny and I got along with everyone so well. The director, Miles, was especially amazing. His concept right from the start blew me away and it was such a great experience to work with him and have our visions come alive through this film.
The single comes off your new album Iridescent- what ' s the story behind the title? The definition of iridescent is: showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles. I chose this title for my new EP because some of the songs on it are about how people change. I relate the word iridescent to how people change or how people aren ' t exactly what they seem.
How was the recording and writing process? My favorite part of being a musical artist is writing and recording my songs. My writing process consists of me sitting down with my song writing notebook at night looking out my window with a view of Manhattan. The view alone inspires me along with an event, a feeling, a person, or an experience from my life. When writing, it ' s always about something relevant in my life. The recording process is also really fun. I record some of my songs in Nashville where my producer Glenn Rosenstein lives and part in New York.
What aspect of teenage angst and emotional challenges did you get to explore on this record? I still go to high school so juggling school and my career has been emotionally and physically challenging but totally worth it. I always write from experience, so all my emotion comes out through my lyrics. I try to write to have teens relate to what I say. Some of my songs revolve around helping teens and others with mental illness. I touch on topics like depression in hopes to help end the stigma around it.
What made you want to explore these themes? Mental health awareness has been a close issue to me for many years. I ' ve helped countless people through tough times and even went through a state of depression myself in middle school. The first step in fighting mental illness is talking about it, so if I talk, I hope to inspire people to get help and talk as well.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics? Each song I write comes from something that I experience. From relationships, events or even a conversation.
Any plans to hit the road? This summer I ' m going to perform a lot around New York and anywhere else I get invited to go. I may also be on a tour in the fall.
What else is happening next in Whitney Woerz ' s world? I continue to write new songs constantly so new music is already on its way! Also, a new school year is coming up along high hopes for“ Idea Of Her”:)
