This is George Lambert, actually. I’m the drummer, and I wrote all
of the lyrics on the album except “Three Strikes.” That tune was
lyrically written by our original bass player, Gordon Jennings.
Paradise Kings have been busy with breaking in our awesome,
shiny new bass player, Bob Gross. He’s a monster and a
fantastic guy. He’s got a few gigs under his belt and is fitting in
nicely. We’ve got quite a few gigs coming up in the next month,
including our CD Release party on Sunday, July 30th at the
Uptown Lounge in Santa Barbara. We start at 2pm if anybody’s in
the area. Thanks for asking.

The opening lyric says it allW..”Back in the day, there was a girl
of mineW.” I had this really beautiful girlfriend in college named
Dana. She’s a stunning Italian beauty, and I just had her in mind.
I juxtaposed it against supped-up, fast cars, and that’s what came
out. I wrote the lyric and took it to Jeff Gring, our amazing guitar
player, and we just worked it up as a jump, jive swing tune. Jeff’s
really into that style of music, and I think it came out pretty well.
Henry Garrett, our singer, really nails the feel of it as well.

College. I graduated from the University of Arizona. I met Dana
there and a group of insane partiers, and we pretty much went
off. How we all graduated, I’ll never know. We were called “The
D-Crew.” If you’ve seen Animal House, that was pretty much it.
Anyway, we were all metaphorically screamin’ down the highway
of life W.”no bumps, no bruises, it all just flowedW.” The D-Crew
are all doing quite well in life, by the way. I had to quit the party
scene all together four years ago. I’m doing MUCH better.

I was listing to the radio one day while driving around and
somebody came on saying that the fire department was doing
some controlled burn in the area, so I thought, hey, that’d be a
pretty cool name for an album. I told Jeff and Henry, and they
liked it. Basically, nobody threw anything at me when I mentioned
the name, so we just kept it. I think it sums up the CD pretty well,
actually. I’d like to mention that Henry’s wife, Jan, sings with us at
our gigs, and she nails a funk tune on the album called “Butter
Me Up.” Jan is a fantastic vocalist. To have two of Santa
Barbara’s top vocalists in one band is pretty special.

The writing process was basically me having fun writing lyrics.
You see, I used to dabble in script writing, so I used to write 11 0
pages of description and dialog. Of course, they were all pretty
bad, but I did have to constantly think of ideas for scripts. That
process kind of spilled over into ideas for songs. I kind of look at
lyric writing as telling a story with a beginning, middle and end.
Jeff is keyed into that as well. A song should make some sort of
sense, tell some sort of story for people to connect to it. That’s
