Mac Mac DeMarco DeMarco Canadian singer-songwriter, Mac DeMarco, has experienced a rapid increase in popularity over the last couple of years, thanks to his second full-length studio album Salad Days which made him a household name within the indie circuit. With the release of his 2015 EP Another One came a much more mainstream fame as the record became popular in countries all over the world, and played on radio stations of every genre. Thanks to his chilled out sound, humble sense of humour, gold star personality and his relationship with fans, Mac DeMarco’s following is bigger than ever - just in time for the release of his third studio album This Old Dog. 1 W ith Mac DeMarco having performed at American music festival Coachella the day prior to our interview, I seem to have woken him up slightly too early as I phone him at 6.30pm UK time; 10.30am Los Angeles time. He answers my call straightaway, although only manages a “Good mor-” before he starts yawning. “Sorry, my friends and I were at Coachella until pretty late last night and I’ve only just woken up.” Although despite his tiredness, I’m greeted with a friendly and relaxed voice that is incredibly reminiscent of his music. As I hear him walk through his apartment to what I assume is the kitchen, he pours himself a bowl of cereal and takes a seat at his kitchen table. Having originally recorded the demos for This Old Dog back in late 2015, Mac DeMarco decided to abandon the project and come back to them later down the line. “I wrote a lot of the songs from the new record just because I was writing songs, not because I was proactively trying to write a record.” he explains. It was a conversation with his record label, Brooklyn- based independent record label Captured Tracks, that reignited " I wasn't proactively trying to write a record " his desire to complete what would become This Old Dog. “They told me it had to be done by the end of 2016, so I started writing more and more until I had a finished album. Although I really liked some of the songs I’d already written back in New York, so I fixed them up a little and decided to use a lot of those, and most of the new record is first takes of that.” The majority of tracks on Mac DeMarco’s new album, namely My Old Man and A Wolf Who Wears 2
