Mac DeMarco
DeMarco
Canadian singer-songwriter, Mac DeMarco, has experienced a rapid
increase in popularity over the last couple of years, thanks to his second
full-length studio album Salad Days which made him a household name
within the indie circuit. With the release of his 2015 EP Another One came
a much more mainstream fame as the record became popular in countries
all over the world, and played on radio stations of every genre. Thanks to
his chilled out sound, humble sense of humour, gold star personality and
his relationship with fans, Mac DeMarco’s following is bigger than ever -
just in time for the release of his third studio album This Old Dog.

DeMarco
having
performed at American
music festival Coachella
the day prior to our
interview, I seem to
have woken him up
slightly too early as I
phone him at 6.30pm
UK time; 10.30am
Los Angeles time.
He answers my call
straightaway, although
only manages a “Good
mor-” before he starts
yawning. “Sorry, my
friends and I were at
Coachella until pretty
late last night and I’ve
only just woken up.”
Although despite his
tiredness, I’m greeted
with a friendly and
relaxed voice that is
incredibly reminiscent
of his music. As I hear
him walk through his
apartment to what I
assume is the kitchen,
he pours himself a bowl
of cereal and takes
a seat at his kitchen
table.
Having
originally
recorded the
demos
for
This Old Dog
back in late
2015, Mac
DeMarco
decided to
abandon the
project and come back
to them later down
the line. “I wrote a
lot of the songs from
the new record just
because I was writing
songs, not because I
was proactively trying
to write a record.”
he explains. It was a
conversation with his
record label, Brooklyn-
based
independent
record label Captured
Tracks, that reignited
" I wasn't
proactively
trying to write
a record "
his desire to complete
what would become
This Old Dog. “They told
me it had to be done
by the end of 2016,
so I started writing
more and more until I
had a finished album.
Although I really liked
some of the songs I’d
already written back
in New York, so I fixed
them up a little and
decided to use a lot
of those, and most of
the new record is first
takes of that.”
