Honoring the past, looking to the future

his Veterans Day,
(Wednesday, November 11) the
United War Veterans Council will
once again present America’s Parade – our nation’s largest
celebration of service.
The Parade carries on the
traditions of the New York
City Veterans Day Parade,
which in turn traces its
roots back to earlier parades organized by veterans of the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
These marches took place
each year on November 25,
which was celebrated as
Evacuation Day, celebrating the departure of British occupying forces from
New York City and General
George Washington’s triumphant return in 1783.
The tradition of celebrating our veterans on November 11 began in 1919, with

marking the end of World
