Space Shuttle Astronaut U.S. Air Force As a young man growing up in Washington, D.C., I was taught that if you dreamed big and worked hard, anything was possible. So that is what I did. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, I became a pilot in the Air Force and was later selected to become a space shuttle astronaut. On my first mission to the Space Station, I was looking down at this incredible planet of ours and could see that it was true. Anything really is possible.
