4 2 016 Y EA R BOOK / D U R BA N NORT H 2016 YEARB OOK / D UR BA N NO RT H MESSAGE FROM DR FELICITY COUGHLAN Graduation marks one of the most important milestones of one’s life. It marks the moment at which you stop reflecting on what brought you here. More importantly that you look ahead to what you can do with what you have achieved. For some of you that may be further studies, for others the world of work and some of you may be changing direction altogether. We trust and believe that The IIE degree is the foundation on which you are going to build the future you deserve. The most important things you have learnt are not the content of any of your subjects but rather the skills acquired through mastering the content - everything from time management, argumentation and analysis to an appreciation of the interconnectedness of our society. Celebrate your achievement. Go out there and make it count! Dr Felicity Coughlan Director of The IIE MESSAGE FROM Margi Boosey Dear Graduates What a year 2016 has been – definitely a year of the unexpected, both globally with Brexit and the Trump votes and, closer to home, with our own political and societal turmoil. Despite all this uncertainty, you continued to work hard (most of the time) and develop the grit necessary to get you over the finish line – grit is a defining characteristic of successful people and you have it. It has been our privilege to watch you face the multiple and varied challenges along the way to you completing your degree and to see you grow and mature into the graduate you now are. On behalf of your lecturers and the Durban North staff team I say: Congratulations! You’ve done it! I wish you continued success in your future – in every sense. Wherever your path may take you, remember: be good and do good and love every minute of it. Warmly, Margi Boosey Principal Varsity College Durban North 5
