If you had the opportunity to sit in on our team talks, be a part of our warm up relays, win games you weren’t expected to or just be part of the “banter” you would understand why I’m not ready to hand in my VC hockey kit. Hockey has taught me how to work hard – it has challenged me, thrown me out of my comfort zone and most importantly it has introduced me to some of my best friends. Varsity College Hockey is a place where commitment is expected, laughter is encouraged and togetherness is essential. I owe a lot to Varsity College Hockey, to my coach and to my teammates – for pushing me to be the best that I can be, on and off the field. Being a sportsman, I am very competitive, and this has helped motivate me to try and succeed both on the sports field, and in the classroom. I am proud to say that I have played for the Varsity College Men’s 1st hockey team for the last three years. In this short time, the team has managed to win the Men’s Durban Premier League for both outdoor and indoor, win Gold in the B section of the annual USSA Hockey Tournament which meant we were promoted to the A section, as well as boast a long list of players who were selected to represent our provincial and national sides. Thanks to excellent coaching and my talented teammates, I was able to push myself and eventually be given the opportunity to represent my country. Playing hockey for Varsity College has been an amazing experience, and I will cherish all the memories I have made during my time here forever. IIE BA(CC) Hockey Nicole Pallet IIE BA(CC) Surfing I started surfing at the age of eight but only really became competitive at 15. In 2012 and 2013 I was fortunate enough to represent South Africa at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Nicaragua and Panama. When I decided to study at Varsity College in 2014, I was stoked to be able to represent VC at all my surfing events. These last three years of surfing for Varsity College at USSA has been crazy fun (and freezing), but I am glad that I can say I was a part of the girls Varsity College team that took the trophy home every year. Varsity College has supported me all the way and have helped me to not only do well in surfing but to get a degree as well, and for that I will be forever grateful. IIE BA(CC) Hockey for South Africa Steve Mc Manus IIE BCom Hockey for South Africa I have played for the Varsity College Men’s Hockey 1st team for the past three years, and what an incredible journey it has been. From winning USSA B section, beating the Varsity Cup Champions (UJ) 4-1 the following year, to winning the Durban Men’s Super League, I have gained so much experience that cannot be taken away from me. Receiving high quality coaching and playing with the top class calibre of players in our squad has significantly developed my hockey. This ultimately landed me a place in the South African U21 team for 2015/16. I owe all of my successes to my coaches and teammates that pushed me week in and week out on and off the pitch. I have formed friendships that will last a lifetime and memories that will never fade. 17
