W “I was smoking one packet of cigarettes every day. When I discovered vaping, I saw the potential immediately.” hile studying for a degree in engineering, Alexandre Scheck and fi ve friends created the Enovap: a ‘smart’ e-cigarette. The six of them were all smokers at the time, so they wanted to create a product that was not only going to replace cigarettes but be effective at encouraging other smokers to quit them altogether. “The idea started with me,” says Alex, who’s CEO of the company, “I was smoking one packet of cigarettes every day. When I discovered vaping, I saw the potential immediately.” Alex knew that he could use this device to reduce his nicotine intake, but then he thought: what if he could create a device that reduced nicotine automatically? So, that’s exactly what he did. He says: “The tipping point was when I went from smoking 20 cigarettes a day to 10 while using a traditional vape. I then realised I had different nicotine needs throughout the day, so I wasn’t satisfi ed with vaping alone and this became our focus for the Enovap. “We developed the revolutionary technology of a double pod system. The vaper fi lls one pod with zero mg nicotine and the other with a higher level of nicotine, they select the dosage they want and then the device instantly adjusts to get the perfect nicotine concentration.” This system also facilitates flavour mixing, so the user can fi ll each pod with a different juice for a truly personalised experience. But what makes the Enovap a truly ‘smart’ device is that it uses artifi cial intelligence. The device ‘reads’ how much has been vaped throughout the day and adjusts the nicotine level accordingly. “After 28 days, the device knows its user’s behaviour and will automatically adjust to cater to their nicotine needs at any moment. This is revolutionary because it has the ability to decrease your nicotine intake day by day, helping you quit altogether.” Users are also able to track their usage and nicotine intake through the associated mobile phone app, which collects data that can then inform future device updates. Alex says: “A big advantage is that we’re able to collect this data and understand our users’ behaviour. Understanding how they use the device is the key to evolving and being effi cient in helping them reach their smoking-cessation goals.” And the Enovap is tried, tested, and approved by Alex and the team themselves – as they all used it in the fi nal stages of their smoking- cessation journeys. But what has it been like trying to encourage French smokers to give up the habit of a lifetime? Alex says: “Yes, 33 percent of the French population are smokers; but that hasn’t made it diffi cult. We’re actually perceived in the French market as THE smoking-cessation solution. “In the early stages, the Enovap was presented with an award by French President Emmanuel Macron, at a ‘top ten success stories’ award ceremony. It’s since grown immensely and is now available at over 700 shops in France.” Alex and the team now want to see the Enovap available at a similar number of stores in the UK, but fi rst they must fi nd the right distributors who truly appreciate their vision. “We are confi dent that the Enovap can become the industry leader in smoking-cessation, though we must fi rst fi nd a distributor that will properly market the product; it’s a hi-tech tool, not just a new hardware device.” They’ve already picked up a whole host of awards; including Innovation of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to the Vape Industry at the Vapouround Awards 2019 and are looking forward to building on that success throughout 2020.
