LETTER FROM THE So now we know. The CDC has fi nally revealed that vitamin E acetate - a thickening agent used in many black market THC vape products - has been found in lung tissue samples taken from a number patients. And a leading US doctor who has treated more than 30 victims of the vaping-related lung injury cases has an interesting theory about the cause of the outbreak. Critical care pulmonologist Dr. Scott Aberegg said: “It may turn out there are only two kinds of people who get this disease: those who vape THC and those who won’t admit it.” The sad thing is that that this news comes far too late because the damage has already been done. Many ordinary Americans now fear vaping and want nothing to do with it. They would much rather continue smoking than ‘risk’ switching to an e-cigarette instead. Only a few days ago the American Medical Association called for a complete ban on all vaping products and it wants any future vape devices to be available on prescription only. Thankfully President Trump reversed his decision for a federal flavour ban…at least for the time being. Maybe there is hope for the US vape industry yet. It is not all doom and gloom though. In this issue you can read all about the October Vaper Expo UK event which was one of the best yet. I loved the music-free business-to-business day and top of my Christmas present list would be for this to become an industry norm. There was also a huge energy and buzz about this event and a real feeling of optimism, despite the troubling news which continues to come from the US. We also attended the Next Generation Nicotine Delivery conference in London last month where the recent events in America were discussed and debated. It looks as though there will continue to be change in the global e-cigarette industry but we are used to change by now and have even come to embrace it. Enjoy this fi nal edition of 2019 and I wish you every success for 2020 where we will be back with all the latest news and views from one of the most exciting industries around today.
