Long-term Use of E-cigarettes Helps US Smokers Quit

According to a recent US study , around eight-five percent of smokers used an e-cigarette for their last attempt to quit with forty-two percent effectively quitting .
In the US , e-cigarettes are not encouraged as a smoking cessation tool , unlike the UK . At present , they are legally viewed as tobacco products that are regulated by the FDA . The study which was carried out by The Department of Family Medicine and Public Health of the University of California in San Diego , studied smokers and dual users ( of both cigarettes and e-cigarettes ) to scrutinise the relationship between long-term use of e-cigarettes and smoking cessation in a two-year period . The e-cigarette market has grown rapidly , according to the survey “ dual use has raised concerns that it might delay quitting of cigarette smoking .” They defined long-term use as using e-cigarettes over the entire two-year period . Between 2012 and 2014 , Dr Shu-Hong Zhu , the professor who led the study and his team surveyed 2,028 smokers . They outlined smokers as “ those who

The study , supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health under the State and Community Tobacco Control Initiative , also surveyed and compared the use of FDA-approved pharmacotherapy cessation aids , such as nicotine replacement therapies ( NRT ), including patches , gum , lozenges , inhaler or medicines like bupropion . Other key findings highlighted that over ninety-five percent of long-term users perceived e-cigarettes as less harmful than cigarettes . With more than sixty-five percent of users stating that they had used e-cigarettes daily for at least one month , because of “ their perception of a lower level of harm .” The researchers concluded that smoking cessation is higher among long-term e-cigarette users , including frequent attempts to quit than with other types of

NRT ’ s . According to them , it is easier to understand the success of smoking cessation with surveys conducted over longer periods of time than the one-year setting . The longitudinal study is the “ first to examine the long-term use of e-cigarettes and its association with quitting outcomes .” So this is music to the ears of vapers , who can rejoice at the fact that there is now an official report which acknowledges and the use of e-cigarettes as an effective aid to quit smoking .
