experts agree that the announcement is a brilliant endorsement of the harm reduction benefits of vaping .
They highlighted that this stamp of approval from health officials would improve public perceptions about e-cigarettes and help undo years of damage caused by anti-vaping propaganda .
Linda Bauld , professor of public health at the University of Edinburgh stressed that misperceptions about safety have left many smokers hesitant to switch .
She said : “ While there is good evidence that e-cigarettes can help people quit , we also know that up to one-in-three smokers in the UK has not tried these devices .
“ The option of having approved devices that could be prescribed would reassure smokers about the relative risks … this is excellent news .”
The government deserves huge praise for taking this bold decision to look more closely at vaping and for taking an evidence-based , science-led approach .
