When it comes to defending the rights of vapers around the world , all eyes are on the UK government right now . Decisions taken over the next few months have the potential to undo so much of the good that vaping and the wider tobacco harm reduction industry has done in recent years . The influential COP9 tobacco conference takes place in November . This generally takes a very negative view on vaping and has the potential to guide harm reduction policy across the globe . The UK is sending a delegation to this virtual summit and must make the most of this golden opportunity to tell the conference just how crucial vaping is for helping smokers quit . We should be explaining how smoking rates have fallen , how our doctors and health care professionals are increasingly recommending vaping to patients and why tobacco harm reduction is a sensible approach to take . The UK must not squander this opportunity to make a difference at this crucial forum . Countries around the world are only too happy to follow WHO guidelines on vaping and currently their message is : “ Don ’ t do it .” Even if the UK could encourage the WHO to soften its anti-vape position just a little bit , this would be a start . The world is looking to us for leadership and we must not fail to speak out loudly , strongly and unambiguously to let COP9 know that

vaping saves lives . As we were going to press it looks like the WHO want to postpone the vaping debate until COP10 in 2023 . This simply is not good enough . The UK must bang the drum for vaping and encourage other countries to examine the growing body of evidence that says it helps smokers quit . The time to speak up for vaping is now . Just imagine how many countless lives will be lost if we wait for two years to do so . We simply cannot and must not allow that to happen .
