SMOKING SAILORS ARE TOLD :

“ PACKET IN ”

Smoking aboard ships and submarines was banned this year and the Royal Navy says vaping will be outlawed next year .

Tobacco products are now prohibited on board Royal Navy vessels in an effort to make the British military smoke-free by 2022 . While the first step of the plan only applies to chewing tobacco and combustible products , it will soon extend to less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes . In addition to ships and submarines , the ban will also affect designated military sites , with commanding officers being responsible for enforcing the ban on visitors , civil servants and contractors alongside active servicepeople . The policy also outlines that tobacco use is prohibited on vessels that are moored or out of service . A spokesperson for the Royal Navy said : “ Defence has committed to going smoke-free by the end of 2022 to enhance the health and wellbeing of our personnel . “ It is well known that smoking has a long-term negative effect on life expectancy , as well as short-term effects on health , significantly contributing to low aerobic fitness , flexibility , strength and musculoskeletal injury .” Sites will offer dedicated areas for vapers , but officials stress this is a short-term measure to help smokers quit and they will eventually be removed . The Royal Navy is keen to limit smoking-related illnesses and deaths amongst personnel , however they don ’ t currently monitor the number of active smokers in service . Under the new policy , recruits will be encouraged to quit smoking before enlisting , with recruitment documents highlighting that “ smokers tend to be less physically fit and are more likely to suffer injuries and illness .” There will also be an increase in education for active service people , with a heavy focus on tobacco harm reduction and safer alternatives to cigarettes . “ Anti-smoking campaigns ensure a coherent message around the benefits of not smoking on a personal and professional level ,” said the spokesperson . “ Defence Medical Services will play a key role by ensuring that quality smoking cessation services continue to be available to Armed Forces personnel .” Due to Government restraints and a potential conflict of interest , there are no plans to provide servicepeople with free or discounted vape devices , stressed the spokesperson . “ As a Government department we cannot be seen favouring any brands , therefore we are unable to work with individual companies unless contracted to do so .” Anyone caught breaching the new restrictions could face severe penalties said the spokesperson , “ Initially service and civilian personnel will be educated regarding the new policy and be given the
