The European Commission has launched its landmark ‘ Beating Cancer Plan ’, despite an overwhelming backlash from vapers and consumer advocacy groups . Lawmakers want to increase taxes for ‘ novel tobacco products ,’ including e-cigarettes , as well as impose a broad-reaching flavour ban . The proposed measures have infuriated vapers throughout the EU , with advocates saying they could “ undermine the public health potential of vaping .”
John Dunne , director general of the UKVIA , said : “ We are seriously concerned by reports that the European Commission is considering such regressive action . “ While we completely support efforts to combat the scourge of cancer in our society , the creation of artificial barriers to harm-reduction products is clearly counterproductive . “ Adult smokers must be empowered to make positive change , rather than being discouraged .” Dunne points to evidence from Cancer Research UK confirming the harm reduction of vaping when compared to combustible cigarettes . It also highlights the efficacy of e-cigarettes as a cessation tool .
