Duke ’ s University is a private research university located in Durham , North Carolina , in the US . They accepted multi-million dollar funding from Philip Morris in 2008 to establish the Duke Centre for Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Research , now the Duke Centre for Smoking Cessation . The company emphasises it does not have any control or influence in conducting research or publication . The university further acknowledges the funding on its website and it in journal papers .
Associate Professor of Anesthesiology , pharmacology and cancer biology at Duke University , Sven-Eric Jordt said : “ Our co-author and analytical chemist Dr . Hanno Erythropel and colleagues at Yale University found new chemicals in e-liquids and revealed that they are formed when components are mixed by manufacturers . We became concerned about the high levels of these new compounds that had not been studied in the past and decided to conduct toxicological tests .” The studies looked at how flavour compounds mix with the main solvents in e-cigarettes and what happens when the cells that line the bronchi were exposed to chemicals in flavours such as propylene glycol ( PG ) and vegetable glycerine ( VG ) which are the main solvents in e-cigarette liquids . Jordt continued : “ We consistently observed that the new chemicals formed from the flavours and e-liquid solvents were more toxic than either of their parent compounds .” President of the ANPVU , Carmine Canino responded : “ There are too many errors and manipulations in the scientific article reported by some Italian newspapers that reveal prejudice towards the electronic cigarette . “ The attention to consumer protection is such that just a few months ago , ETHRA and ANPVU were called upon to participate in the revision of the existing TPD directive in light of the latest scientific discoveries .” While the papers have not been withdrawn , a spokesperson at ERS pointed out that the researchers declared a conflict of interest ahead of presenting the papers . The spokesperson said : “ The abstracts have not been withdrawn . ERS discussed the points raised by ANPVU with the authors of the abstracts and is satisfied with their responses . In addition , both authors completed and signed conflict of interest declarations when submitting their abstracts as is normal with any abstract submitted to the congress .”
