N F E R REVIEWS H AEGIS X By Benedict Jones Specifi cations: - Dimensions: 90mm*56.1mm*31.3mm - Battery capacity: 2x external 18650 cells - Charging: 2A Micro-USB quick charging - Power output: 5W-200W Some mods become so popular that they create a wave of copycat devices. The original Geekvape Aegis and Aegis Legend are prime examples of this and opened the floodgates for other manufacturers to release “indestructible” hardware. Approximately one year on from the release of the Aegis Legend, comes Geekvape’s newest full-sized Aegis. Construction, fi t and fi nish of the Aegis X are outstanding. Anything less would be disappointing, since the success of this series of mods is almost entirely due to their rugged build and IP67 water resistant rating. This is by no means the smallest dual 18650 mod and it’s certainly not the lightest but it makes up for this with construction that makes you feel confi dent in the longevity of the device. Tolerances are spot on, with no visible gaps in the seams, rattle-free buttons and a very sturdy battery door. Despite being large for a dual cell device, the Aegis X feels a touch slimmer in the hand when compared with its predecessor, making for a more ergonomic device. The user experience on offer here is intuitive but feature rich. Three clicks of the fi re button take you into the menu where you can adjust a variety of settings, including preheat functions, temperature control, power and temperature curves and memory banks. Holding the + and – buttons when in the menu takes you to the UI control centre, where you can choose from a number of themes and colour settings, along with Geekvape’s ABB balanced charging feature. The bright 2.4” OLED display makes all of this less confusing for new users and is a great quality-of-life feature for those with poor eyesight. In fact, of the many mods I’ve used over the years, this has to be the clearest and most user-friendly display. Some people were concerned that this screen would be a weak point in terms of durability but I’ve had no issues with it during my stress tests, since it’s covered with a thick protective shell. This layer has stood up to PROS - Great build quality - Responsive chip - Large, clear screen 174 VM25 CONS - Battery door can be fi ddly at fi rst multiple shoulder-height drops over concrete, with nothing more than a few scratches to show for it, so I am confi dent that this device will be every bit as durable as the Aegis Legend. In terms of performance, the Aegis X is a joy to use. The original AS chip was no slouch but the all new AS 2.0 is a step up. Power delivery is snappy and very aggressive if set to the powerful preheat. Temperature control appears to be unchanged from the original AS chip, which is fi ne since this is one of the best out-of-the-box TC experiences at this price point. Despite the huge display, battery life is good for a dual 18650 device and I was easily able to get a full day’s vaping at 70W from one fully-charged pair of cells. The ABB balanced charging appears to work as advertised, with both cells reading the same voltage on an external charger after use but I would still recommend always charging cells externally as best practice. In summary, the Aegis X is an iterative upgrade of the Legend, which was one of the best mods of last year. The X brings that same build quality and pairs it with a more responsive chip and stunning screen. This is a fantastic option for vapers who need a device that can withstand an unreasonable amount of abuse.
