REVIEWS REVIEW BY BENEDICT ‘NED’ JONES Hotcig Kubi While Hotcig may not be a big a household name, they have built a reputation for quality products and not Device Specifications: rushing to release an endless stream of devices each year. Mods like the R150S and RSQ are still loved by enthusiasts despite Dimensions: 87*16mm flying somewhat under the radar. E-liquid capacity: 1.7ml The Kubi is Hotcig’s first pod system, with exclusive Battery capacity: 550mAh distribution from deepvaping.co.uk. With the fierce Coil resistance: 1.8Ohms competition in this sector, is it worth checking out? Charging: Micro-USB This is a back-to-basics product. There’s no power adjustment, airflow control or even a button in sight. This is one of the smallest pod systems we’ve seen and is clearly aimed at brand-new vapers or those looking for an ultra-stealthy device. Construction, fit and finish are good. You have the sturdy build quality you’d expect from a Hotcig device. The Kubi is available in a range of anodized aluminium colours along with some rubberised texture finishes. You may not be blown away with how this is built, but it is a tiny, affordable pod system and within that context it’s nicely put-together. The replaceable pods are press-fit into the top of the battery section guided by two tabs with tight tolerances. A removable rubber seal on the pod reveals a generously sized fill port that’s caused me no issues with smaller bottles. I wasn’t expecting much from the tiny 1.8Ohm coils, but Hotcig clearly did their homework. The pods provide a warm and flavourful vape, with a tight MTL draw that emulates a traditional cigarette far better than most pod systems do. The coils even produce a satisfying crackle during vaping that many MTL vapers will enjoy. The small cylindrical form factor and draw-activated firing system means that this really does evoke the experience of smoking a cigarette, which is often overlooked by manufacturers when developing a starter kit. Battery life is another welcome surprise. I found the 550mAh internal cell to last the best part of a day when filled with 20mg/ml nicotine salts. Most pod systems of this size have a 350mAh cell which requires more frequent charging and that extra battery life goes a long way in day-to-day use. I found the Kubi to charge from flat to full in approximately 40 minutes, which is well within acceptable limits and the device does allow for vaping while charging. The Kubi is an extremely simple device that performs surprisingly well and most of all emulates the full experience of a traditional cigarette. Due to its ease-of-use and vape quality, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Kubi to any smoker who is thinking of making the switch. 196 | VM23
