REVIEW BY BENEDICT ‘NED’JONES Larger than a traditional pod system but smaller than an AIO, box mods present a middle ground Device Specifications: for the inconspicuous vaper. Now SMOK have thrown their hat into the ring with the Dimensions: 91*38*16mm (Height including drip tip) Trinity Alpha. Construction: Zinc alloy + polycarbonate The sturdy zinc alloy frame gives the device Weight: 90g a nice weight. Tolerances are good, too. The Battery capacity: 1000mAh internal cell cartridge system fits into place with a firm click and E-liquid capacity: 2.8ml/2ml(TPD edition) Power output: 6-30W solid lock system. z Charging: Micro-USB, 0.7A This device is very easy to use. The 2ml cartridge is held in place with a simple lock system and sliding latch on the device itself. A sliding top-fill mechanism is found on the top of the cartridge and its single port provides ample room for filling. A dedicated button allows you to toggle between soft, normal and hard modes. The soft setting may come in handy for regions that allow levels of nicotine concentration higher than 20mg/ml. The use of replaceable coils is a huge selling point for vapers concerned - Replaceable coils, not pods - Very user friendly about the environmental and financial costs of disposable pods. The use of - Cross compatible with Nord coils an existing fitting from the Nord device is another big bonus as these coils are widely available and known to be among the best when it comes to small fittings. The 0.6ohm mesh coil has a restricted direct lung draw and allows for the maximum 30W power output when set to hard. I’ve found this coil to provide a relatively warm - 1.4Ohm ceramic coils and flavourful vape, but it did drain the 1000mAh internal cell very quickly. leave a lot to be The 0.8Ohm mesh MTL coil provides a moderately warm vape with good flavour and a desired loose MTL draw, though airflow adjustment would improve the experience this coil could offer. Using this coil at the normal or hard setting resulted in around a day’s use on a single charge. Coil longevity was also notable, lasting 10 refills before needing replacement. I also tried the original 1.4Ohm ceramic coil which provided a cool vape with muted flavour even when set to hard, with a very loose MTL draw. If you’re looking for a traditional MTL vape and long battery life from the Alpha, this is your best bet. Overall, this is likely the most user-friendly box pod, with its locking mechanism, top-fill and dedicated power adjustment button. However, the lack of airflow control is disappointing. If you liked the way the Nord performs, you’ll love the cross-compatible Trinity Alpha. VM23 | 193
