A rundown of the latest vape-related
stories and research making the news
around the world.
Irish JUUL
JUUL Labs have announced expansion into
Ireland, with products on sale exclusively in 160
Circle K outlets and 50 Hale Vaping shops, with
more stores expected to follow. All 210 shops
now have JUUL products available behind their
counters, including starter kits and replacement
pods. Gareth Smyth, General Manager of JUUL
Labs Ireland, told Irish publisher for the grocery
retail/FMCG sector, Checkout: “Our mission is to
improve smokers’ lives by offering an effective
switch alternative and our ultimate goal is to
eliminate cigarettes.
“The launch of JUUL in Ireland, a country with
some 830,000 adult smokers, is an important step
towards this goal and towards helping Ireland
reach its tobacco-free targets.”
Another development for the vaping giant is
the introduction of their first ever accessory –
the portable JUUL charging case, which will
be available exclusively in the UK joining the
company’s core range of products.
Insurance for vapers
Philip Morris International (PMI) is now offering life insurance
to UK smokers who switch from combustible cigarettes to
e-cigarettes or heated tobacco products, ECigIntelligence
reports. Their subsidiary company, Reviti, offers a 2.5
percent discount on premiums for customers who
switch to e-cigarettes, and a 25 percent discount if
they switch to one of PMI’s own-brand products. Daniel
Pender, Reviti CEO, told ECigIntelligence: “The life
insurance product we offer is a win-win for Reviti and
our customers. They get competitive premiums and, with
a little help from us, a better lifestyle.”
Helping Hertfordshire
Smokers in Hertfordshire could receive free
e-cigarettes from food banks in the future as
part of a ground-breaking research project to be
designed, run and evaluated by UK university.
Under the initiative, any smoker accessing the
food banks would be given the option of a free
starter kit.
In addition to benefiting local smokers’ health, it
is estimated that switching to an e-cigarette could
save a smoker with a 20-a-day addiction more
than £70 a week, according to Action on Smoking
and Health (ASH).
Not seen, not smoked
Researchers at the University of Stirling found
that tobacco display bans reduce the risk of young
people smoking. The point of sale bans, which
place cigarette products out of sight behind a door,
have reduced ‘smoking susceptibility’ among 11
to 16-year olds by 10 percent. By interviewing
3,791 young people before, during and after the
ban, the researchers were able to establish the
youths’ attitudes to smoking.
Their findings suggest that, pre-ban, 28 percent
of child never-smokers were likely to start smoking;
post-ban, this figure dropped to 18 percent.
