From Johnnie’s experience, shop cleanliness can be one
of the biggest pitfalls. “I’ve been into some shops and
I’ve been disgusted, when you walk in the door handle
is dirty, the open sign is still closed, people not caring
– a calendar sat there that’s two months out of date…
[customers] won’t tell you that your shop is filthy, they just
won’t come back – you’ve either got it, or you ain’t!”
“When somebody walks over my threshold, my door, into
my establishment I look after them like they’re the only
person in the shop,” telling others that even if the trade’s
traffic is slow that day “don’t worry about the ones that
haven’t turned up, take care of the ones that have – and
the rest: keep it clean and tidy, and be happy”.
