IQOS Mesh VAPE UNVEILED
A new closed pod vaping device which replaces traditional coils with a mesh-based heating system is now on sale in the UK . The IQOS MESH uses a German-made metal mesh heater which manufacturers Philip Morris International ( PMI ) say offers a more consistent vape experience . It uses interchangeable VEEV capsules , available in seven different tobacco and fruit flavours and has a low liquid detection system to prevent dry hits . Its single block aluminium construction makes it light and durable and a 90-minute battery charge should allow a full day ’ s vaping . The IQOS MESH starter kit has a £ 19.99 RRP with capsules costing £ 2.99 for a pack of two .
The Italian Job
Italy ’ s Deputy Prime Minister has suggested the Mediterranean country ’ s vape laws could be about to change . In an interview with SigMagazine , Matteo Salvini said that the Italian vape sector will be reformed with dedicated vape legislation . He said , “ This provision is not going to take anything away , but a market is going to be liberalised and standardised , giving businesses a boost and vitality . It is incredible that the health issue has never been taken into account , other countries are helping those who want to stop smoking and recommend vaping . I understand and share the annoyance of thousands of workers in the vaping sector in trouble : being stuck for a bureaucratic bickering is unworthy of a civilised country .”
India to ban e-cigarettes
Federal health ministry officials in India have initiated calls to ban the sale , importation , promotion and use of e-cigarettes in the nation , but not cigarettes . According to the Indian government , smoking kills more than 900,000 people in the country every year . But officials said that e-cigarettes and Heatnot-Burn ( HnB ) devices must be banned outright , saying they are ,“ A great health risk to the public at large , especially to children , adolescents , pregnant women and women of reproductive age .” Advocacy group the Association of Vapers India ( AVI ) commented on the ban saying , “ The advisory must be withdrawn immediately ,” citing advances and endorsements of vaping in places like the UK .
US : FDA warning letters work a treat
The US Food and Drug Administration says a selection of US-based vape companies have stopped selling products which resemble candies , juice boxes and snacks . The news follows the public health authority ’ s aims to clamp down on e-liquids that could appeal to minors because of their names , flavour descriptions and packaging . In May , the FDA and Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ) sent out a series of letters to 17 companies , and all of those affected have ceased selling such products . FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb , MD said : “ The FDA will continue to take vigorous actions under our Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan to restrict youth access , limit youth appeal , and reduce toxic exposure to youth from all tobacco products , and , in particular , e-cigarettes .”
Scot FREE
Scottish prisoners are to be offered free vape kits as part of government plans to cut smoking rates behind bars . On November 30 , the Scottish Prison Service will distribute starter kits free of cost until January 2019 . Despite footing the initial £ 200,000 bill , the SPS believes that using an effective method of cessation will reduce costs in the long term . An SPS spokesperson said , “ Introducing rechargeable vaping devices ( RVDs ) is an interim process to help prisoners break deep-seated habits .” Prisoners will also be educated on all harm reduction options , and how to cope in a tobacco-free environment .
Turn back time ?
An Italian study has found that vaping could reverse some of the harms caused by smoking in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ). Half of the 44 patients evaluated had either significantly reduced their tobacco intake with e-cigarettes or had switched completely . The other half smoked tobacco but did not vape . The e-cigarette users experienced a 91 percent reduction in daily cigarette use after a year , reduced respiratory infections and other COPD symptoms , improved general health and a relapse rate of just eight percent . Dual users reduced their daily cigarette intake by at least 75 percent and experienced improved respiratory health and quality of life .
