THE TALE OF THE STAPLE COIL
Once upon a time, there were two
master coil builders, both at the
forefront of a burgeoning industry.
As friends, and to a limited extent
rivals, they would set each other
challenges which they’d race to
complete first.
One day, the square wire
challenge was thrown down.
The first builder, let’s call him
“Kent”, started exploring the
idea of fusing four round wires
together to form a square. The

other, “Ryan”, had been
exploring the options
provided by ribbon wire.
It seemed simple at first:
take some ribbon wire,
stack it up, fuse it and
there you have it; square
wire. However, nothing in
life is that simple even for
Ryan who, prior to being
a master builder, was an
engineer.
He looked at the wire
and knew it
wouldn’t work
in the obvious
way as the bottom of the
stack would be under
compression and the top
under tension.
With all the parts
separate, it would never
wrap into a coil that
would please Ryan and
win him the race, so he
decided upon the novel
idea of wrapping the
wire with the ribbon on
its side. Now, this would only work
if the fuse wire was good and
tight, but work it did!
The race was won!
Even Ryan didn’t know the
significance of his creation. The
staple coil was with us and Ryan,
better known as Squidoode, had
forged a path through the coil
world like few others. Right then,
