In 1996, California became the first US state to legalise
cannabis for medicinal use. The move kickstarted a chain of
reform that would lead to Colorado and Washington legalising
recreational use in 2012. In 2017, the legal cannabis trade in
the US was valued at $8.5 billion – accounting for 90 percent
of the global market.
The tolerance of medical and recreational cannabis in legal
states helped pave the way for the now-flourishing CBD
industry. High-CBD cannabis strains are a relatively new
phenomenon that evolved out of California’s medical cannabis
market.
Over the past two years, the state’s wellness industry
fully embraced CBD. Edibles in particular proved to be an
entry point for those who had eschewed other routes of
consumption on health grounds.
Daniel Hood, co-founder of California edibles company
CALIGOLD, said:
“It’s evident that a significant part of the market favours
edibles over other forms of consumption, like smoking or
vaping.
“It’s simply a more comfortable and familiar means of using
wellness products.”
