trend and Fay was the right act , at the right place , at the right time . It needs to be noted Fay created her own opportunities envisioning new performance possibilities presented with a style that was uniquely her own .
Her residency at Langdon ’ s led to a series of Royal Palace performances ; she performed for Eric Clapton ’ s 40th birthday party and at the wedding of Sting and Trudy Styler . Elton John and Cliff Richard welcomed her into their homes .
Up to that point closeup magic was not perceived as “ real magic ” by the British public . Fay was breaking new ground , establishing herself as a high end , closeup , strolling magician and restaurant dining table-hopper .
Much of the opportunities for future magicians that followed were a direct correlation to her successes . In
1991 , Fay Presto was voted by “ Tatler Magazine ” as the “ Party Entertainer of the Year ”. She was the go-to entertainer for royalty and given the honor of performing at Diana , Princess of Wales first black-tie banquet .
Fay has performed for Queen Elizabeth II on multiple occasions . At the Queen ’ s Golden Jubilee in 2002 , during the sound check , in the garden of Buckingham Palace Paul McCartney stated on a live microphone . from the edge of stage , “ Fay is a “ F ****** Genius .”
With all this success one would think Fay would be content , basking in the limelight . She was living an entertainer ’ s dream - she had steady work , a fabulous reputation and great passion for her craft . What she really craved and what she didn ’ t receive was recognition from her peers , in her case “ the Magic Circle ”.
While her gender hadn ’ t seriously hampered her magic successes in the real world , “ the Magic Circle ” remained a good-old-boys network and a very tough nut to crack . Women were finally allowed access to join the sacred circle in 1991 .
In 2005 , Fay entered “ the Magic Circle Close-Up Magician of the Year Competition ” and placed second . The judges couldn ’ t relate to Fay ’ s magic . There was a disconnect between traditional close-up magic performed sedately in front of a close-up mat and Fay ’ s commercial performance with real items such as ice buckets , glasses , napkins and cutlery .
Determined not to give up she competed again in 2006 and placed third . She was understandably disillusioned and dejected . Fay had broken the mold of a traditional close-up magician and once again felt she had to fight for a place for herself . She was the source for a new wave of magicians who had followed her into the cut and thrust of banquet event and elegant dining performance in the “ real world ”.
Did she surrender and admit defeat ? I ’ m certain you can predict the answer .
