ONGC , Greenko green hydrogen and ammonia collaboration
In a move to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by moving into renewable space , India ’ s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited ( ONGC ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 26 July 2022 to enter into a joint venture with one of India ’ s leading renewable energy companies M / s Greenko ZeroC Private Ltd . The MoU is in line with National Hydrogen Mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make India a green hydrogen hub . The MoU envisages ONGC and Greenko jointly pursuing opportunities in renewables , green hydrogen , green ammonia and other derivatives of green hydrogen . The deal will contribute towards India ’ s target of producing of five million tonnes of green hydrogen per annum by 2030 .
Funding for H2 storage pilot
Lower Saxony ’ s ( Germany ) Environment Minister Olaf Lies has presented the funding notification of EUR 2.375 million for Uniper ’ s planned hydrogen pilot project at the Krummhoern natural gas storage site . On the occasion of the handover , he said : “ The climate crisis and the war against Ukraine are forcing us to push ahead with the energy transition at top speed . It has long been clear that the energy transition cannot be achieved with electrons alone . Hydrogen will be a central element for the success of the energy transition …. The advantage of hydrogen is that it can be stored . In order for it to develop this advantage , we need storage facilities , including caverns . I ’ m pleased that Uniper wants to use cavern storage for hydrogen here in Lower Saxony .” Doug Waters , Managing Director of Uniper Energy Storage , said : “ With this pilot project , we are gathering the empirical data that we urgently need in a world without fossil fuels : namely , how we can realize the storage capability of green electricity in a CO2-free future .”
The pilot plant with a storage volume of up to 250,000 cubic meters of hydrogen is planned by 2024 .
Neste to invest in new refinery renewables
Neste Corporation will invest in new production capacity for renewable products in Rotterdam . The decision is based on a significant increase in demand for renewable products due to customers ’ higher climate ambitions . Neste ’ s current production capacity for renewable products in Rotterdam of 1.4 million tons ( MT ) per year is the largest in Europe . The investment of approximately EUR 1.9 billion for the expansion of the refinery in Rotterdam will increase Neste ’ s total production capacity in Rotterdam to 2.7 MT per year . This includes a sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF ) production capacity of 1.2 MT per year . The company aims to start up the new production unit in the first half of 2026 . “ It is an important step to ensure our future competitiveness and the execution of our growth strategy for renewable energy sources , as it provides a significant amount of renewable diesel , SAF and renewable raw materials for polymers and chemicals available to our sustainability-focused customers ,” said Matti Lehmus , President and CEO of Neste .
Nextchem awarded project for bio-methane
Maire Tecnimont S . p . A . has announced that its subsidiary NextChem has been awarded a contract by Storengy to carry out an Advanced Basic Engineering Study for a waste wood and solid recovered fuel conversion plant to produce biomethane . Once the project has reached the final investment decision targeted by the end of 2022 and is granted the related permitting , NextChem , in association
Project overview
with another Maire Tecnimont Group ’ s subsidiary , shall act as an EPC contractor for the methanation package of the project , which is set to be implemented in Le Havre , France . Storengy , an ENGIE subsidiary , is one of the world leaders in underground natural gas storage .
Albioma selects Emerson for renewable energy
Global technology and software company Emerson ( EMR ) has been selected by Albioma ( ABIO ), a French independent energy provider , to help transition its coal-fired Bois Rouge plant to 100 % renewable energy . As part of Albioma ’ s wider mission to transition all of its existing fossil fuel plants to renewable energy , Emerson ’ s automation systems and software will enable the coal-fired power station to convert to biomass feedstock . The multi-million-dollar project is the latest example of how Emerson technologies are helping customers accelerate their transition to more sustainable energy . The power plant , one of three that Albioma operates on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean , will be converted to use 100 % biomass wood pellets . The overhaul of the 108-megawatt facility will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 640,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year , an 84 % decrease in direct emissions compared to current operating levels . The Bois Rouge plant consists of three generating units . Two units are already controlled by Emerson ’ s Ovation™ distributed control system , which will be modified for use with biomass feedstock , and the third unit will be replaced with a new Ovation system . The units will also be modernized with new turbine protection and health monitoring systems , safety systems for the boilers , and upgraded boiler control elements and instrumentation . To ensure the project is completed within the available timeframe – a critical requirement of Albioma – Emerson will provide its Project Certainty methodologies , digital technologies , and software expertise . In addition to delivering local engineering support for the project , Emerson will provide its Remote Virtual Office ( RVO ) collaboration platform – a secure virtual engineering and testing environment that will enable Albioma to access Emerson ’ s resources . Work on the transition project will begin during a planned outage in June 2022 and is scheduled to be completed within five months .
