During the Conference session , Velan will present an additively manufactured sleeve made of Inconel 718 which is designed to provide thermal insulation . Through an FEA simulation , thermal insulation and stress reduction were assessed and compared with thermal shock results obtained experimentally . Further tests were carried out , but the presentation will show that this was a successful use of additive manufacturing technology to mitigate thermal stresses .

When speaking to Valve World magazine earlier this year , Valve World 2022 Steering Committee member Carlo de Bernardi of ConocoPhillips ascertained that “ Investing in new technology like 3D printing is not really investing in machines , it is investing in knowledge .” In order to truly invest in such knowledge , ongoing tests and quality control measures are required to aid meaningful implementation of AM technology on a larger , broader scale . “ Filtering and analysing the data is key . Right now , we are learning as an industry how to do it ,” said De Bernardi . “ I am delighted that the conference will dedicate attention to additive manufacturing . This is much more than a new manufacturing process , it ’ s a new way of thinking and making things . We need to reinvent our approach to design , manufacturing and testing if we want to utilise the full potential of this technology .” Additive manufacturing has a key role in the future of valve design and manufacturing , and the collaboration of an inventive , productive , and forward-thinking industry will ensure a bright future of exciting possibilities .
