Hydrogen
Five hydrogen supply corridors :
••
Corridor A : North Africa & Southern Europe
••
Corridor B : Southwest Europe & North Africa
•• Corridor C : North Sea
•• Corridor D : Nordic and Baltic regions
•• Corridor E : East and South-East Europe
aim to reduce Europe ’ s reliance on Russian gas by two thirds before the end of the year . Included in the EC ’ s goals is the aim to reach 20.6 Mt of hydrogen by 2030 , thus an increase of 15 Mt on top of the initial 5.6 Mt proposed in Fit for 55 ( see footnote ). The EHB 2022 report suggests that this would require co-located ( demand-side ) electrolysis ; cen- tralised hydrogen production from captive renewable energy sources ; largescale blue hydrogen production ; pipeline imports ; and ship imports of hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia and methanol . All of this will then need transport infrastructure to link the regions of supply to regions of demand . The EHB is confident that it can provide this , referring to its own analysis which states a hydrogen pipeline can transport some 65 TWh of hydrogen per year . This would mean that transporting half of the REPowerEU target of 10 Mt , or 330 TWh , would require approximately five large-scale pipeline corridors .
Action
The first stage would be for these five corridors to link up local supply and demand across Europe , and then expand the links to connect Europe with neighbouring areas of export potential . In order to successfully develop these pipelines , however , clear action points have been established :
• Develop new and repurposed hydrogen infrastructure
• Access financial support to expedite deployment of hydrogen infrastructure ( such as incentivizing adoption of hydrogen in demand sectors )
