OIL & GAS
Refining hotspots
Africa is currently a focal point for oil and gas project activity, with analysts suggesting that refining capacity could be boosted by 1.2 million barrels per day( mbpd) by 2030. Take the following refinery projects as examples: Hoima( Uganda, implementation agreement signed), Cabinda( Angola, operations started in Q2 2026, the current 30,000 bpd could be doubled in a second phase), Lobito( also in Angola, 200,000 bpd), Soyo Oil Refinery( 100,000 bpd, Angola), Senegal Second Oil Refinery Project( 4 mtpa by 2029), Gode( Ethiopia, 3.5 mtpa), Ogun State Refinery( Nigeria, initial refining capacity of 100,000 bpd, rising to 450,000 bpd), Ndola( Zambia, 60,000 bpd which would meet the nation’ s entire fuel needs with surplus for export), Abia Modular Refinery( Nigeria- a 10,000 bpd facility), Jomoro( Ghana, 300,000 bpd), and lastly Ondo( Nigeria, planned 500,000 bpd capacity). On the topic of refining, further interesting news comes from Brownsville, Texas, set to host the first new U. S. refinery to be constructed in more than fifty years. Upon completion, the facility is expected to process more than 60 mbpa of domestic crude into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. What makes this project especially noteworthy is the feedstock – shale oil. Currently produced in abundance in the U. S. via fracking technology, most of this light crude is actually shipped to European refineries as domestic refineries were
