The power and water industries are undergoing significant changes due to the ongoing energy transition , global sustainability targets and increasing electrification . These shifts present new challenges that require advanced technologies to connect separate data sources and provide a comprehensive view of operations . In response to these industry trends , Emerson has updated its automation platform . Ovation 4.0 introduces several features designed to address current and future needs of power and water utilities .
POWER & WATER
Emerson advances power and water automation
A new update to Emerson ’ s automation platform introduces softwaredefined , AI-ready architecture for the power and water sectors . This development aims to help utilities use data more effectively and adapt to the changing demands of the energy transition .

Enhanced automation features
The updated platform aims to integrate data related to reliability , safety , production and sustainability across various operations . It includes advanced automation capabilities , improved simulation tools and an AI-ready architecture . These features are intended to help utilities predict and optimise their operations more effectively . One significant aspect of the update is its ability to manage complex portfolios of distributed energy resources ( DERs ). The system can handle realtime , two-way inputs from various sources such as combined cycle plants , wind farms , hydro facilities , solar panels , battery storage , microgrids and electric vehicle charging stations . This capability could provide operators with a more detailed view of the grid , potentially improving load and demand management . Bob Yeager , president of Emerson ’ s power and water business , emphasised the platform ’ s potential : “ Our next-generation platform will help modernise power and water operations , unlocking predictive strategies to help utilities meet the evolving pressures of the industries .”
Artificial intelligence and digital twins
The platform incorporates AI models trained on operational

Through its leading automation portfolio , including its majority stake in AspenTech , Emerson ’ s focus areas include helping manufacturers optimise operations , protect personnel , reduce emissions and achieve sustainability goals .
data . These models are designed to offer guidance on operational and maintenance practices . Additionally , the system uses digital twin technology , which creates virtual replicas of physical assets . This technology aims to enable data-driven decisions and collaboration across different parts of an organisation .
Advanced visualisation and control
Ovation 4.0 introduces the new Ovation View human machine interface and integrates Ovation Green renewable supervisory control and data acquisition software . These additions provide a clear view of operations , advanced analytics and forecasting tools , improving awareness across traditional and renewable generation and energy storage segments .
Unified customer experience
All Ovation 4.0 technologies will be supported through the Guardian™ digital customer experience , offering a single point of access to real-time monitoring , indepth analytics and actionable insights . Yeager added , “ This enhancement will help us strengthen our position as a go-to partner , helping our customers modernise with a software-defined architecture that provides the most advanced control systems without completely overhauling existing infrastructure .”
