WATER / DESALINATION
estimates at least 6.74 million tonnes of CO2 emissions will be avoided over the first 26 years of operation.
SUEZ / Orascom desalination package
The project’ s SWRO facility has a design capacity of approximately 851,000 m 3 / day, equivalent to around 300 million m 3 / year. It includes the marine seawater intake, intake pumping, pretreatment, reverse osmosis trains, post-treatment and brine / outfall infrastructure, according to Suez. A plant of this scale potentially requires substantial quantities of corrosion-resistant material in areas including:
• seawater intake pumping and associated pipework;
• pretreatment systems;
• RO high-pressure piping and manifolds;
• membrane train piping;
• high-pressure pumps;
• energy-recovery devices;
• brine piping;
• chemical dosing systems;
• valves and actuators;
• instrumentation connections;
• strainers and filters;
• pressure vessels and tanks;
• outfall-related equipment.
Detailed material specifications have not yet been identified in publicly available project documentation. However, comparable large-scale SWRO installations commonly employ a range of corrosionresistant materials, potentially including 316L, duplex and super duplex stainless steels and high-alloy austenitic grades such as 6Mo, alongside GRP and other nonmetallic materials. Final selection depends on chloride concentration, pressure, temperature and individual service conditions.
Extensive valves requirements
The valve requirement for the AAWDCP will be enormous. An 851,000 m 3 / day SWRO installation will typically require isolation, control and non-return valves throughout intake, pretreatment, RO, pumping, brine and product-water systems.

Plants of this type typically require large numbers of butterfly valves, check valves, ball valves, control valves, air-release valves, pressure-control valves and largediameter isolation valves. The marine intake and brine-discharge systems will also require isolation and flow-control equipment, although detailed valve specifications and suppliers have not yet been announced.
The 438 km conveyance package
The enormous EPC package for the water transmission equipment is being delivered by the consortium of: VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Orascom Construction, Arab Contractors, and Archirodon, led by VINCI. Design documentation shows largediameter buried transmission pipelines, generally in the approximately 2 – 2.5 m range, together with pumping stations and hydraulic-control structures 5. Design-stage drawings identify air valves and washout valves along the conveyance route and indicate intermediate air valves along rising and falling sections, with final locations to be established during detailed design. The scale of the pipeline potentially represents a substantial valve package. Other likely requirements include:
• mainline isolation valves;
• large butterfly valves;
• check / non-return valves at pumping stations;
• pump isolation valves;
• control valves;
• pressure-reducing / control valves;
• surge-control equipment;
