Maintaining control

This month our special focus topic is control valves , which are at the heart of many industrial processes . Control valves play a pivotal role in regulating the flow of fluids and gases to ensure the optimal performance of numerous systems . As we venture deeper into the era of Industry 4.0 , the importance of embracing cutting-edge technologies for control valves cannot be overstated .
The integration of smart technology in control valves is transforming their functionality and efficiency . Advanced sensors and microprocessors facilitate real-time monitoring of flow parameters , enabling valves to adjust automatically to varying conditions . This level of autonomy not only minimises human intervention but also significantly enhances process efficiency and safety .
Moreover , the advent of the Industrial Internet of Things ( IIoT ) connects control valves to a vast network of devices , enabling seamless communication between components . This interconnectedness allows for predictive maintenance , reducing downtime and associated costs . By leveraging data analytics , plant operators can identify patterns and trends , enabling them to optimise valve performance and proactively address potential issues .
This month we ’ re also pleased to welcome our friends from Teadit back to the cover of Valve World . Their cover story is an insight into how North American President Chris Day transformed the company a few years ago by rooting out signs of “ silo mentality .” In case you ’ re unfamiliar with the term , it refers to the compartmentalisation of key business units within an organisation so that they function independently . Chris developed a holistic strategy to combat this mentality , both bringing in experts and utilising in-house expertise . This radically impacted how the company approached its business and its strategy for the future . The article offers a rare glimpse into how a large , successful organisation successfully initiated significant global change .
Further in the issue , we have a treat from Dr Michel Pluviose , who has penned a fascinating technical paper on kinetic energy degraders , also known as vistemboirs . If you ’ d like to discover what a letter to President Carter , an article we published in 2013 , and the theory of chaos and dissipative structures have in common , go straight to page 17 ! Dr Pluviose explains that a system pushed far into disorder can create order , then elegantly translates this theory into practical solutions for disrupting supersonic flows in valves , which can violently interfere with and damage structures . This is a must-read if you need to “ calm your valves ” and regain control .
I want to end by mentioning one work activity that certainly requires a lot of control in terms of planning ; shutdown . In his interview on page 29 , Colin Zegers has some powerful words of advance we should all take to heart : “ take planning seriously and start well in advance .” Sounds like a life lesson to me !
Best wishes ,
