ture : A Look at Projects Around the World
EUROPE
Agri-environmental policy and trends in agricultural nutrient use in Europe differ from those in North America . Historically , nutrient surpluses in western Europe were larger than in the United States . The fertilizer industry in Europe includes 4R concepts within its Infinite Nutrient Stewardship concept and has developed initiatives to comply with national and EU policy goals , including precision farming technologies , a tool for estimating the carbon footprint of fertilizer manufacture , a circular economy action plan , and support for implementation of a nitrogen use efficiency indicator 4 .

The use of an Integrated Soil-Crop System Management approach has been demonstrated to improve both nitrogen use efficiency and crop yields of more than 20 million farmers in China , from 2005 to 2015 . 4 Recent studies show farmland benefitting from the Nutrient Expert practice using the 4R Stewardship ; this treatment achieved 4.4 % higher grain yield and 5.8 % more profit over the traditional practices . 8

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship has developed a sister project in Sub- Saharan Africa called 4R Solutions , to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability for more than 80,000 smallholder farmers . Recognizing that crop yields in this part of the world needs more production to uphold the livelihood challenges these communities face , the Abuja Fertilizer Summit of 2006 has called for an increase in fertilizer use . This call for a Green Revolution in Africa resulted in the Integration of Soil Fertility Management ( ISFM ), which are a set of necessary practices that include the use of fertilizers but combine the knowledge on how to adapt this practice into local conditions . Still , there is a lot of opportunity to attain larger scales of adoption in the 4R and ISFM practices . 4

South- Western Victoria ’ s cropping zones have implemented the 4Rs during a research project to ensure its capability of reducing nitrogen emissions . This project willfully understands that one of the best management practices to reduce emissions and improve efficiency would be to implement and integrate the 4Rs within the existing structure of agriculture , and by using less nitrogen fertilizers or splitting applications of nitrogen fertilizers , increases the efficiency of plants by allowing less nitrogen to be lost in the atmosphere , especially to waterlogged crops . A methodology for dryland agriculture in Western Australia is yet to be approved , however research shows that the 4R Nutrient Stewardship initiative is a great rule-of-thumb . 7
