Valley View High School is having its first Best Buddies prom on Saturday, March 11th! Best Buddies is a program at Valley View Schools where special needs students get to hang out with regular education students.

When Kelly Green, the special education teacher at Valley View High School(also KAIT8’s 2016 teacher of the year), saw her students weren’t very comfortable at the large prom, whether it was the

crowd there or how loud the music was, she decided to work with the best buddies program to create a prom where her kids could really enjoy themselves.

The Best Buddies program, of which Madison Tyer is president, and Mrs. Green created an article for the Jonesboro Sun asking the community for dresses for the prom… and the community responded! Over thirty dresses were donated. Though, the community outreach did not stop there! Jim Alexander donated boutonnieres and corsages; Campbell is doing hair and makeup; a few volunteers are doing the girl’s nails Friday; and Melanie Runzick is taking professional pictures.

With such tremendous community support, the prom will be a blast! Students from Best Buddies are going with their buddies. Anna Rhodes asked Hana Almaskary; Mackenzie Horner asked Rebekah; Lexie Kapalas asked Savannah; Cannon Richardson asked Josh; Mckenzie Moore asked TJ Lenoir; Iham asked DJ Lenoir; and Madison Tyer asked Justin.

As time winds down, the girls are picking their dresses, the boys are choosing their tuxes, and the kids are very excited. Similarly, Mrs. Green is very excited, because for the first time the kids will be able benefit from a night where they can feel just as special as all the other kids.
