ABOVE : Union Station ’ s main hall attracts tourists and locals as well as rail passengers . Hotel rooms are on the top two floors .
Following an extended period of decay , the terminal site was purchased in 2001 by the Regional Transportation District that , along with other organizations , developed a plan to establish Union Station as a regional transportation hub , a goal that was realized in 2014 , a century following the terminal ’ s 1914 opening . Rather than being filled with a collection of retail shops , the final design called for an upscale hotel .
