Hello and Happy Mother ’ s Day from all of us at Valdosta Scene !

One of my favorite shows on Netflix is Ginny and Georgia . It tells the story of a single mom with a rather colorful past trying to raise her two children in Massachusetts . During this last season , Georgia ( the mom ) shows up at her daughter ’ s slam poetry night only to realize her daughter ( Ginny ) had written an unbecoming poem about her . Being the mom she is , Georgia takes it upon herself to write a poem about motherhood and all the struggles she has to deal with .
The poem is edited for brevity . “ Motherhood , doing laundry . Unscented Tide for … sensitive skin . Suddenly a face in the window ! Betrayal . Disillusionment . Worry . Anger . Red hot anger . Rage . Questions . So many questions . Why is this strange visitor climbing through the window of my 16 year old daughter in the middle of the night ? How long has this been going on ? Doesn ’ t she have a boyfriend ? Anger ! Fury ! Motherhood .”
The poem reminded me of my mom , who also did our laundry with Tide for my sensitive skin . It doesn ’ t remind me of a boy sneaking in my window , because that never happened , but I do think of all the times I must ’ ve made her angry or worried her .
Motherhood is not an easy task ; I wish I could say that from experience , but I can ’ t . I only know the stories I ’ ve been told .
Raising children is not the job of one , but the job of many and it takes a village .
This Mother ’ s Day , Valdosta Scene took to the streets to find places where mothers can gather and create a community , rather that be through clubs or in a dance studio with their little ones . Mothers deserve friends and communities where they can discuss the “ betrayal , worry , anger and fury ,” along with all the highs , joys , and firsts that come with being a mom .
I remember growing up and seeing my mom go off to her Bunko nights or Supper Club groups and thinking how lucky I would be to have these groups as an adult . Although I am not yet a mother , I have found a community of women ( some of whom are moms ) that I have loved getting to know .
I hope this Mother ’ s Day and all the days that follow that you ’ ll find your community to fill you up , when your cup feels empty .
