The Valdosta Junior Service League ’ s ( VJSL ) purpose is to improve the Valdosta community ’ s cultural , welfare , recreational , civic , and educational conditions and promote volunteerism and cooperation with organizations . Since its inception in March 1936 , the VJSL has positively impacted the Lowndes-Valdosta community through many service-oriented initiatives and projects . Today , the organization has over 100 active members and over 250 associate and lifetime members . Each active League member commits to volunteering over 50 hours per year .

By giving their talents and time to worthy causes , Valdosta Junior Service League members , many of whom are mothers to the local youth , benefit from the relationships they form with other members as they work toward improving the community .
April Bruhl , VJSL Publicity Chair , describes the group as “ supportive of each other , almost like a sisterhood similar to a sorority . As a member , you become involved and make lifelong friendships with the women you work with .” The organization meets monthly to plan participation in causes in need of assistance and to plan events .
