At 3:17 p . m . EST , July 20 , 1969 , things looked pretty scary for Neil Armstrong and Edwin “ Buzz ” Aldrin .
They were running out of fuel . The flight computer was constantly signaling “ 1202 ,” an alarm few people recognized . The ship ’ s automatic systems lowered their spacecraft into a field of boulders that could wreck the fragile landing lunar module .
And they were almost a quarter-million miles from Earth .
