TESTIMONIES OF RESISTANCE,
AMPLIFYING NEW VOICES:
When women take the stage,
incredible things happen, as their
issues are voiced and confronted
for all to see and hear. In place of
a traditional Spotlight monologue,
we invited activists to select up to
three local leaders or activists to
showcase after the play, inviting
them to speak to the audience
about “What and Why my Vagina
is Resisting”. Through self-created
monologues and rants community
members expressed communal
concerns and outrage.
“The [spotlight] focus was
equality, making space for shared
understanding, increasing awareness
— particularly around transgender
rights and Black Lives Matter. The
three spoken word artists are all very
powerful black women who perform
and raise awareness in our city and
I am honored to call them all friends.
It was wonderful to share the space
with them.”
