A disturbing and continuing trend is that of ex pats traveling to foreign lands and fighting alongside
insurgents. This is happening all over the world even here in Toronto Canada. The radicalization of our youth
whether they have been influenced from terrorist propaganda videos or websites, is not being discussed in the
media. The inherent danger is that these “trans-national” terrorists will eventually return home with extremist
views and training that has been tested in actual combat. This spreads through local communities and infects
other groups of impressionable young adults creating a perpetual cycle. Cells or proxy groups may spring up with
direct ties to the leadership of established terrorist organizations and assist in raising funds or carrying out
domestic attacks on critical infrastructure ot key assets. What does this have to do with training?
Everything…Preparing for a worst possible scenario will not only take you out of your comfort zone but
will build resiliency within your Agency. If an active shooter incident occurs in your city involving a local militant
group who have experienced combat abroad and are used to being fired upon, this situation become entangled
in complexities. The Badguys may go on the offensive and aggressively fight back using military style tactics
gleaned from fighting in other Countries or learned in terrorist training camps. The umbrella of training is not
static but fluid and evolving. Complacency must be countered using a proactive approach and current updated
tactics when teaching your team. Your opponent may not be part of a irredentist or diaspora group but a home
grown and self-taught Jihadist looking to make a name for themself as was the case with the “Toronto-18” group
and the recent “VIA Rail” plot.
Karl Monger MAJ US Army (RET) joins us again explaining more important issues facing our veterans today
and there is also a featured article on HAMAS . The curriculum in this our November 2013 edition centers on the
reactionary gap and sudden attacks. Subjects that will be covered are attempted gun grabs, knife assaults and
fighting a perpetrator while holding a pistol (executing a high-risk warrant). As always, we are focusing on
defensive tactics that are based on realistic events and use simple and gross compound movements. Please,
make some time in your schedules to stay in shape and get some additional training in. Remember that “steel
sharpens steel.” God bless Guys.
Be safe…
