Key 2006 point:

Countermeasures to EFPs in 2006 (CF vs Terrorists):

Soldiers create a homemade mechanism to attract the EFP ahead of the vehicle containing the
troops. This is constructed by attaching a pole to the front bumper of the truck with any sort of
device that generates heat (toaster) on the end of it.
Insurgents counter this by changing the angle the EFPs so that when fired the projectile is
launched backwards as opposed to parallel with the target. This simple change results in a rise of
CF casualties.
The “Rhino Horn” is manufactured from these initial test designs and is deployed (16,000 units) to
US military personnel as an appendage to their armored carriers. 15 The heating unit on the end of
the telescopic steel boom can alter its position which nullifies the angled EFPs. 16
Terrorists enable the EFPs to work off of the radio waves from Military communication devices
and jamming devices making the use of “the Rhino” obsolete.
New EFP detection and neutralizing equipment raises the bar once again. Light detection sensors
(LIDAR) and laser detection sensors (LADAR) are mounted on the roof of personnel carriers or
hidden behind the front grill. These sensors scan the terrain ahead of the vehicle and the laser
activates the PIR prior to contact. 17
Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicles were launched in 2003 but became widely used in 2007 to
offer increased protection from IEDs. MRAPS divided into three task orientated groups. 18
